Description
Temple of Isis at Philae. 20th-century coloured photograph of rising waters around the ruins of the Temple of Isis at Philae near Aswan, Egypt. The complex of temples at Philae was built over a period of 800 years from around 700 BC. This is the temple dedicated to the Ancient Egyptian goddess Isis. At upper right is an entrance structure known as a pylon. Carvings on the walls represent the gods and pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. From 1977-1980, the temples of Philae were rescued from the rising waters of the Nile (rising due to the Aswan High Dam) and rebuilt on a higher island nearby. This view, from around 1977, was obtained by the Matson Photo Service.
